Cape Dory Typhoon National Regatta

The inaugural National Regatta for the Typhoon class will always be remembered as a three day battle with Mother Nature and, even more, for exceptional event planning and shoreside activities.

First, the weather - it was brutal on the Rappahannock River this past weekend. Mom Nature threw delightfully tantalizing moderate breezes at the racers each morning. . . between 8 and 9 while they were eating the regatta breakfast and readying their boats. But, by race time, the breeze did a disappearing act and stayed gone until dinner time when the class was gathering again for socials and cook-outs, etc. Then, each evening came the lightning, thunder, and torrents of rain.

The host Rappahannock River Yacht Club members and volunteers were the epitome of determination. The parties just got better, the food just got more plentiful and the hospitality became even more intense. And, finally on Sunday morning, the Typhoons pulled one on Mother Nature. They slipped out early, ahead of the original schedule, and squeezed in a race that made for the championship. It is especially fitting that the event coordinator, Ron Mihills won the championship fleet and is therefore the 2011 Typhoon National Champion. A total of 32 Typhoons were at the nationals, 19 in the Championship fleet and 13 in the Corinthian fleet. Placing second and third respectively in the Championship fleet were Gary Hooper and Norm Smith. In the Corinthian fleet, John Friday took first place, followed by Bill Turenne and Lance Franke in that order. Event Chairman, Ron Mihills. Principal Race Officer: John McCarthy

The Results Are In!

Thirty-two (32) Typhoons competed in the first Typhoon National Regatta this weekend. Nineteen boats competed in the Championship class and 13 boats in the Corinthian class. Congratulations to the winners!

CHAMPIONSHIP CLASS:

3rd Place - Norm Smith, Pogy

CORINTHIAN CLASS:
1st Place - John Friday, Friday's Child

Rappahannock River Yacht Club ("RRYC")

RRYC was founded in 1936 to serve the interests of local pleasure boat owners. In 1941 the club house which stands today was built on the shores of Carter's Creek. In 1983 the Rappahannock River Sailing Association was formed and established the first series of races on Carter's Creek and nearby the Rappahannock River. Cape Dory Sailboat Owners Association ("CDSOA")

The CDSOA, Inc. is a national organization of Cape Dory and Robinhood sailboat owners incorporated. CDSOA has members from Washington State to Florida, California to Maine and beyond, and are always looking for new Cape Dory, Intrepid and Robinhood owners to join. Carter's Creek - The Largest Concentration of Typhoons

It started twenty-one years ago when George and Elise Hilbert purchased their Typhoon newly named Pipit. Shortly after several other sailors became interested in obtaining Typhoons and soon enough the five-boat fleet was formed on Carter's Creek. This began the tradition of Wednesday night racing which is a familiar activity up and down the Chesapeake Bay. On Saturday, August 22, 1992, the first local Typhoon Regatta took place. The five boats are seen below parading up Carter's Creek just off Church Prong.
The five-boat fleet has since grown to over 50 boats on the Northern Neck. Just with a few mile radius, there are over 35 Typhoons in or on Carter's Creek -- the highest concentration anywhere. In response to this intense interest in Typhoon sailing, the first ever Typhoon National Regatta will take place on June 10-12, 2011.

Cape Dory Typhoon - America's Littlest Yacht

As designer Carl Alberg aptly named her, the Cape Dory Typhoon is truly America's Littlest Yacht. Stretching 18'6" and sporting a full keel with 900 lbs. of ballast, the Typhoon handles like a boat multiple times her size. One of the most notable features is the shape of the cockpit. With high coamings and a deep cockpit, you "sit in" rather than "on" her, creating a sense of comfort and stability. Her unusually long cockpit provides more room than most 30 footers. "In my designs I go for a boat that you can sail upright without scaring the life out of your family or friends," Alberg wrote. He clearly achieved his goal.

Three models of Typhoons were built: the Weekender, the Daysailer with cuddy cabin, and the open Daysailer. Over 2,000 Typhoons were built between 1966-1986. Later in production the 22'6" Typhoon Senior was built. Over 90% of the boats built were the Weekender model. To learn more, check out the Cape Dory Sailboat Owners Association at www.capedory.org.
