History

In 1992 five identically restored Cape Dory Typhoon daysailers competed in the first annual Typhoon regatta on the Rappahannock River. Over the past 20 years the number of Typhoons has exploded to 40 boats on Carter’s Creek in Irvington, VA and another 20 boats on nearby creeks and rivers. The Rappahannock River Yacht Club hosts weekly Wednesday night races during the sailing season with up to 20 boats on the starting line. Sailors sail to the race course from their own docks on Carter’s Creek or slips and moorings at RRYC.

Typhoon National Championship Regatta
The local Typhoon sailors enjoy the sailing and social events so much that they decided to host the first ever, non-spinnaker, “Typhoon Nationals” in 2011. It was a weekend filled with sailing, food, fun and laughter! Local Typhoon sailors opened their homes to provide overnight accommodations for out of town guest sailors. Renowned racer, author, lecturer and instructor John McCarthy served as Principal Race Officer.  This year, as they host their second Typhoon Nationals, news is spreading outside the Chesapeake Bay area and there will be more boats on the starting line than ever before.
